Sensory Resonance Results in Multisensory Integration

Sensory Resonance and Multisensory Integration

The idea of Sensory Resonance and Multisensory Integration originated in the late 60’s and early 70’s when the founder was a science major in college.  It got developed over the many years that followed because it’s been fortunate enough to be able to continue this research.  In 1989, a paper was published about this subject in the MegaBrain Report which detailed an expanded view of the human autonomic nervous system (ANS). This theory puts forth the idea that there are both resonant and dissonant effects to our nervous systems by the choices we make.

Figure One: The Autonomic Nervous System (Expanded View)

The figure above shows the standard model of the ANS overlain with an expanded version that shows a quadratic nature of the nervous system…parasympathetic vs. sympathetic and resonance vs. dissonance.

There are seven specific principles that define sensory resonance.

  1. Balancing and Harmonizing the Autonomic Nervous System
  2. Giving the Brain Security and Coherence
  3. Enhancing Spiritual Receptivity by Opening the Pineal Gland
  4. Expanding the State of Mind by Overcoming Homeostasis
  5. Providing Access to the SuperConscious As Well as Subconscious
  6. Lifting the Soul by Enhancing Healthy Pleasure
  7. Creating Sensory Resonance Techniques and Technologies

First principle – Balance and Harmonize the Autonomic Nervous System.

The Human Nervous System

The main indicator of biological status is called metabolism, which is a chronobiological measurement of the frequency and timing (periodicity) of various life cycles such as breath-rate, heartbeat, and other circadian, ultradian, annular, and generational repeating spirals. The first response of metabolism to physical, physiological, or psychological intervention to all sensory input is well known to be the autonomic response of the Autonomic Nervous System.

The ANS consists of a two-way cycle basically determined by whether the ANS is speeding up into a sympathetic response or slowing down into a parasympathetic response,  The condition of complete and total ANS balance of both systems is known as homeostasis.

The brain always tries to maintain homeostasis…a “middle of the road” state of mind where the the two systems are balanced. Any move away from homeostasis requires a choice between challenge or threat.  If a sympathetic experience is perceived as a Challenge, such as in a “sports-high” or spiritual ecstasy, the body, mind and spirit move toward Resonance, which feels wonderful and leads to health and life.

If such an experience is perceived as a Threat, such as the fear experience with a first time skydive or confrontation, the body, mind and spirit move toward Dissonance, the so-called “fight or flight syndrome”, which feels uncomfortable and, if continuous, can eventually lead to illness and death.  Read the details of this phenomenon on the figure below.

Likewise, when the shift is toward the Parasympathetic system, challenge results in deep resonant meditative states whereas threat leads to the need to recharge and sleep. An overabundance of dissonant parasympathetic experience can lead to being bored, unengaged, feeling guilty, frustrated, lonely, confused, hedonistic and can even lead to criminal behavior and going overboard to overcome boredom.

Second principle- Resolve what blocks access to Higher States of Mind by giving the RAS what it wants…Security and Coherence.

The Sensory Relay Station of the Brain (RAS)

This is the first principle The ANS cycle of these two extremes is regulated by a large network of nerves called the Reticular Activating System (RAS), that lies at the base of the brain, but is directly connected to all of the major brain centers.  The function of the RAS appears to be related to the prioritizing of sensory input and overall security of the organism, but it has also been shown to regulate the frequency and amplitude of brainwaves and perhaps all metabolic processes.

The source of all RAS input is a network of sensory receptors that exist on the membrane surfaces of the integumental system of the body…skin, nasal passages, eardrum, retina, tongue and others serve as the surface membranes…in other words, consciousness exists on the “membrain” as well as in the brain.

The sensory mechanisms are the only connection consciousness has with both the internal and external environments…so any study of consciousness has to begin there. Modern civilization has created environments that tend to significantly shift the ANS balance towards a sharp increase in SNS response with a corresponding decrease in the tone of the PNS.  This is the purpose of meditation and other methods that have been designed to relax, calm and ease to shift focus back to the parasympathetic relaxation response.

The ANS is the chief regulator of this process, so to balance the RAS is the equivalent of Homeostasis. However, homeostasis is just that…a static rather than dynamic experience.  Life is supposed to be dynamic and compelling…full of challenge, excitement, satisfaction, pleasure and happiness as well as peace, calm, challenge, sadness and pain.  We are not meant to have to stay in homeostasis any longer than it takes to rest and re-energize.  We are supposed to grow and evolve into higher and higher states of order.

The RAS is wonderful and amazing system probably the main thing responsible for our survival though all of the challenges of life and evolution.  It can quickly take control of all body, mind and spirit functions and focus them on a suddenly occurring intense or meaningful event.  It can allow you to hear your name in a crowded room even if you are focused on something else.  Conversely, it can block out sounds that are bothersome but inescapable like moving next to a railroad track or airport.

However, it can also block access to all of the higher and more wonderful states such as feelings of peace, well-being, connectedness, that all is okay and that faith and trust can be placed in fate.

Since the beginning of history, humans have tried to reach these higher states of mind without knowing what is blocking access to them.  Wild dancing, plant medicine, self-punishment, meditation, psychedelics and other methods have been developed over the years to quieten the action of the RAS and allow better access to these more desired states of mind.

The technologies developed by InnerSense and RMT are based on the concept of sensory resonance, which suggests that instead of trying to bore it, shock it, calm it…why not just give it what it wants…security and sensory coherence.

Third Principle – Enhance the Ability to Receive Spiritual Communication.

Spiritual Receptivity

Transformation is a really wide range of change from something as simple as shift in mood all the way up through changes in health, finances, relationships to the pinnacle of transformation…becoming who we will be when we pass over to the other side…a type of transformation the ancient greeks called Allasso…a full transcendence of the human condition that evolves a material physical being into an eventuated spiritual essence.  So, the ultimate goal is spiritual evolution.  If someone is going to go through all of the efforts to transform something in their lives, why not just go all the way and become a spirit walking around on the physical plane?

The ability to make contact with spirit in the citadel of the mind is, at its most basic level, purely glandular.  There is a difference between intellectual thought and spiritual thinking, which constantly makes attempts to adjust or modify regular thought by revealing its true spiritual meaning and purpose.  The spirit circuit enters the pineal gland with the goal of reaching the pituitary gland that controls all behavior.  If it could reach that receptor and deliver its signal unscathed a person could become their true self over time.  However, once again the signal gets blocked from direct delivery because it has to travel through the brain’s third ventricle called by the ancients…the Cave of Brahma.

Figure Three: The Physiology of Spiritual Experience

The ceiling of the 3rd ventricle is the Thalamus, which is hooked up to all of the external sensory mechanisms.  The walls and floor are mostly the Hypothalamus which is connected to all of the internal senses. Therefore, the spiritual transmission is modified as it passes through the cave and becomes influenced by our internal and external experience.

Fourth Principle – Cause the Nervous System to Expand in both Directions at same Time to Increase its Bandwidth and Bypass the Limits of Homeostasis.

Homeostasis demands that metabolism be pulled back to center if it goes too far in either direction.  Sensory Resonance has shown that the only way to bypass these nervous system governors is to go both ways at the same time.  This Zen approach to awareness is superior to other methods that simply attempt to reduce focus on the sympathetic system and refocus it on relaxing and letting go.

In other words, practicing relaxation and inspiration at the same time can lead to sensory resonance.  Sports, spiritual bliss, love and achievement are examples of experiences that can lift and inspire, while music, nature, friendships, pets and meditation are examples of things that can calm and relax.  So, listening to music while doing sports, having a spiritual experience while walking in nature, making love with a best friend, playing ball with a pet and meditating with your favorite music are all examples of this expanded state of mind called sensory resonance.

Going both ways simultaneously, results in being profoundly relaxed and extremely inspired at the same time ultimately resulting in self-realization and self-mastery.  This is the perfect state of mind for any activity…work, play, study, contemplation, worship and others.

Fifth Principle – Giving Equal Conscious Regard to Both the Superconscious and Subconscious.

Therefore, balance of the RAS is not the goal, but rather to provide the brain with what it wants so that it gets out of the way of spiritual reception and allows a person to fully experience the full functions of their higher mind…one’s essence…spirit.

The mind (consciousness) has a triune nature:

  1. SuperConscious
  2. Conscious
  3. SubConscious

Most of the studies done on this subject focus on the conscious and subconscious.  However, if the existence of the subconscious is hypothesized then, to be consistent with the triune nature of reality the existence of a superconscious must also be part of the theory. This triune model of conscious-ness creates a time perspective that stretches from the past through the present and into the future.  For more information about the triune nature of reality please read the blog on the website entitled Triunity and the Unit of Time Perspective.

Principle Six – Lift the Soul by Enhancing Healthy Pleasure.

Sensory Resonance leads to profound relaxation, inspired bliss, self-mastery and self-awareness whereas Dissonance results in anhedonism and self destruction.  Anhedonism, the inability to experience pleasure, is the first step of all disease states.  For more information about the “pleasure freeze” study the works of Dr. Janet Hranicky Galitzer, MD., Founder of the American Health Institute in Los Angeles and Co-Director of the Hippocrates Center in West Palm Beach.  There’s a huge difference between constructive healthy and destructive sordid forms of pleasure.

Principle Seven – Create Sensory Resonance Techniques and Technologies.

Light, Color, Sound, Music, Tactile Vibration and Digital Psychedelics

We were involved with the psychedelic movement in the 60’s and did a lot of research on the benefits of non-ordinary states of mind.  When I realized that the chemicals slow down the brain’s ability to make certain neuropeptides I vowed to dedicate my life to creating methods and technologies that assist people into achieving such states without having to introduce exogenous chemicals into the body.

From that research came the conclusion that there’s a pharmacy inside our heads and we are the pharmacists.  We can write a prescription to feel anyway we want, but many will to do that.   Instead they will allow someone else or some situation they’re in to write it for them.  We wanted to create technologies that teach people how to make their own special neuropeptides, thereby co-creating their own reality.

Figure Seven: There’s a Pharmacy in the Brain and we are the Pharmacists

Since that time we’ve been designing, developed and distributing practical uses of this discovery by designing and building multi-sensory playback platforms that allow a person to see, hear and feel a sound or music signal.  We call these devices Sensory Resonance Vehicles that provide easy, rapid, safe, fun, exciting but relaxing journeys into innerspace.  The first commercial unit was sold in 1984 when InnerSense originally incorporated.

This technology appeared well before the general public was ready and it has taken all these years for the world to catch up.  However, the subjects of consciousness, intention, manifestation, transformation, vibrational medicine and sound therapy are suddenly mainstream concepts and InnerSense has emerged with all of its science and technologies intact and ready to spread it out all over the planet.  For more information about the science and technology of Sensory Resonance, please visit www.harmonicresolution.com.

Hello!
I am a developmental pediatrician in WLA and see children with developmental and behavioral issues. Many or most of them have some mild to significant sensory issues that impact their development and behavior. The usual treatment is sensory integration occupational therapy which tends to help the child be more self regulated and improve their motor function.

I am intrigued about your sensory based approach to address mental and physical health.
Do you have any experience using this treatment in children?
Can you refer me to articles/research in this area for children?
I would like to speak with Don Estes to get some more information about this approach to see how it can be applied to the pediatric population for autism, ADHD, anxiety.
Thank you.

Children and Seniors all love the sensory wellness technologies we make at VibraSound and use in our therapy center in Santa Monica.
